Lupin the 3rd: The Secret of Twilight Gemini

Released in 1996, The Secret of Twilight Gemini was produced as part of the long-running annual tradition of Lupin III television specials by TMS Entertainment and VAP. Arriving at a time when the franchise was undergoing a modern visual refinement, this entry was directed by Gisaburo Sugii, who infused the production with a distinctively gritty, adult-oriented aesthetic that departed from the more whimsical tone of earlier adaptations. The narrative centers on a quest for hidden treasure in Morocco, blending heist tropes with regional folklore to provide a cinematic sense of adventure.

The character designs were crafted by Masahito Yamashita, who leaned into sharper, more angular lines that emphasized the hardened personalities of the ensemble cast. Upon its release, the film was noted for its departure from the softer animation styles of the 1980s, receiving positive attention for its tighter pacing and thematic focus on the legacy of the Lupin name. It remains a significant milestone in the franchise's history for establishing the tone that would define many of the darker, standalone television features produced throughout the late 1990s.
