Maetel Legend

Maetel Legend is a two-part original video animation released in 2000, serving as a prequel to Leiji Matsumoto’s celebrated Galaxy Express 999 series. Produced by Vega Entertainment, the project was designed to explore the origins of the iconic character Maetel and the tragic transformation of her home planet, La Maetal, into the mechanical world seen in the later series. It functions as a foundational narrative piece, detailing the societal collapse that led Queen Prometheum to pursue total mechanization.

The visual direction and character designs retain the melancholic, ethereal aesthetic synonymous with Matsumoto’s work, characterized by elongated figures and a somber, operatic atmosphere. While it was produced as a modern expansion of the Leijiverse, it drew heavily on the established lore of the 1970s manga. Critics and fans often view it as a necessary, if stylistically distinct, supplement that provides emotional depth to the overarching tragedy of Maetel’s lineage and the cold resolve of her mother.
