Where it came from
Magia Record: Puella Magi Madoka Magica Side Story was produced by studio Shaft as a television adaptation of the 2017 mobile game of the same name. It serves as a spin-off within the established Puella Magi Madoka Magica universe, shifting the focus from the original series' protagonists to a new cast in the fictional city of Kamihama. The production sought to expand the franchise's lore while retaining the studio's signature surreal aesthetic, characterized by complex architectural motifs and layered visual symbolism.
The series direction was handled by Gekidan Inu Curry, the creative duo responsible for the distinct 'witch barrier' sequences in the original 2011 anime. By infusing the show with their unique artistic style, the team aimed to craft a more labyrinthine and unsettling atmosphere than traditional magical girl narratives. While the series was met with interest from the established fanbase, reception was varied due to the challenges of adapting a non-linear mobile game narrative into a coherent episodic television format.
