Where it came from
Magical Princess Minky Momo: La Ronde in my Dream was released in 1985 as an original video animation, serving as a companion piece to the popular magical girl television series that concluded in 1983. Produced by Ashi Productions, the project was intended to revisit the character in a more mature, conceptual format, allowing the creative team to experiment with the magical girl genre outside the constraints of episodic television broadcast requirements.
The animation features a distinct shift in tone and aesthetic compared to the original series, emphasizing a surreal, dreamlike atmosphere that reflects the mid-1980s transition toward more experimental animation styles in the Japanese direct-to-video market. It was directed by Kunihiko Yuyama, who aimed to capture a reflective and melancholic mood, which resonated with the series' aging fanbase and remains recognized by collectors as a notable departure from the traditional lighthearted magical girl formula.
