Magical Project S Specials

Magical Project S, known in Japan as Magical Girl Pretty Sammy, originated as an original video animation spin-off from the Tenchi Muyo! franchise, produced by studio APPP in the mid-1990s. The series reimagines the character Sasami Kawai as a magical girl, blending the established harem comedy tropes of the parent franchise with the popular mahou shoujo genre of the era. The project was conceived as a lighthearted creative expansion, allowing the studio to experiment with character redesigns and a shift toward whimsical, fantasy-oriented storytelling.

The character designs were overseen by Hitoshi Okuda, who successfully translated the Tenchi Muyo! aesthetic into a more colorful and energetic style fitting the magical girl format. The specials served to flesh out the series' world-building and character dynamics following the initial release of the OVA episodes. Upon its debut, the series was received as a charming curiosity by anime fans, praised for its self-aware humor and the studio's ability to maintain the high production standards expected of the wider Tenchi Muyo! universe.
