Magical Sempai

Magical Sempai, known in Japan as Tejina Senpai, is a 2019 television anime adaptation based on the long-running comedy manga by the author Azu. Produced by the studio LIDENFILMS and directed by Fumiaki Usui, the series chronicles the clumsy attempts of an aspiring magician who suffers from extreme stage fright, focusing on her humorous interactions with a reluctant assistant. The production leans heavily into the source material’s slapstick rhythm, utilizing short-form, twelve-minute episodes to maintain the quick-witted pacing established in the manga.

The aesthetic design of the series centers on the visual contrast between the protagonist’s elaborate, classic magician attire and her persistently failed illusions. LIDENFILMS sought to translate the manga’s expressive, character-focused art style into a fluid animation format, emphasizing physical comedy and exaggerated reactions. Upon its release, the series was received as a lighthearted contribution to the slice-of-life genre, noted particularly for its dedication to showcasing genuine, albeit basic, magic tricks performed with increasingly comedic consequences.
