Where it came from
Mahjong Hishou-den Naki no Ryuu was produced by Bandai and released in 1988 as an original video animation (OVA). Based on the long-running manga series by Junichi Noujou, the adaptation captures the gritty, high-stakes atmosphere of professional underground mahjong. The story centers on a mysterious, masterful player known as 'Ryu,' navigating the dangerous world of organized crime and intense psychological battles inherent in the gambling culture of the era.
The production utilized a dark, cinematic aesthetic characteristic of late 1980s adult-oriented animation, reflecting the source material's focus on tension rather than the typical tropes of the shonen genre. Directed by Masami Hata, the OVA was designed to appeal to mature audiences familiar with the manga's intense narrative style. It remains a notable example of the trend during the late 1980s where niche, specialized manga titles were adapted into direct-to-video formats to capture the expanding home video market.
