Where it came from
Mahjong Soul Pon☆ was produced by Scooter Films and released in 2022 as an animated spin-off series based on the popular online mahjong game Mahjong Soul, developed by Cat Food Studio. The series serves as a lighthearted, comedic companion to the digital game, intended to expand the reach of the franchise by highlighting the quirky personalities of the game's core characters in short-form, slice-of-life vignettes.
The animation style and direction were designed to capture the whimsical charm of the source material's character designs, prioritizing expressive humor and gag-driven storytelling over the competitive intensity of professional mahjong. As a result, the series was received primarily by the existing player base as a playful tribute to the game's lore, successfully translating the virtual experience into a casual, character-focused television format.
