* 'Ron' is also called 'Naki' in mahjong, which has the same pronunciation as 'Crying' in Japanese.

Where it came from
Released in the late 1980s, Mahjong Hishou-den Naki no Ryuu: Hiryuu no Shou is a direct-to-video anime adaptation based on the popular manga series by Junichi Noujou. It captures the gritty, high-stakes atmosphere of professional mahjong subculture that defined much of the seinen manga genre during that era, centering on a mysterious and formidable player known as Ryuu.
The animation production was handled by Studio GAINAX during a period when the studio was building its reputation for distinct visual styles. The adaptation aimed to translate the intense, psychological drama of the source material into a moody, atmospheric aesthetic, focusing on sharp character designs and the heightened tension of mahjong matches. While it remains a niche title today, it is regarded by collectors as an interesting historical artifact of GAINAX’s mid-80s output prior to their global success with later projects.
