Mai-HiME: Kuro no Mai/Saigo no Bansan

Released in 2010 by the animation studio Sunrise, this special serves as an extension of the Mai-HiME franchise, which originally began as a television series in 2004. The special, titled Kuro no Mai/Saigo no Bansan, was produced to commemorate the series' legacy and provide fans with additional narrative content that bridges thematic elements found within the expansive Mai-HiME universe, blending the studio's signature character-driven drama with the supernatural action sequences that defined the original run.

The visual direction and character designs were crafted to maintain continuity with the established aesthetic of the franchise, emphasizing the dramatic, high-stakes atmosphere that Sunrise became known for throughout the mid-2000s. As a standalone project in the home video market, the special was received as a nostalgic piece for the dedicated fanbase, focusing on the complex interpersonal relationships and the darker tonal shifts that characterized the series' later installments and supplemental material.
