Where it came from
Major, the long-running sports anime series based on the manga by Takuya Mitsuda, debuted its first season in 2004 under the production of Studio Hibari. The series follows the life of Goro Honda from his early childhood through his professional career, focusing on his singular dedication to baseball. This opening season was crafted to introduce viewers to the emotional weight of Goro's path, emphasizing themes of perseverance and the complex relationships formed through team sports.
The adaptation was directed by Kenichi Kasai, who sought to translate Mitsuda’s detailed character dynamics into a compelling visual narrative. By balancing high-stakes gameplay with intimate moments of personal growth, the series garnered a dedicated following, particularly among fans of the sports genre. Its reception established a standard for long-form character development in anime, eventually spawning multiple sequels that tracked Goro's maturation across several decades.
