Where it came from
Maken-Ki! Tsuu P～Watakushigoto was released in 2014 as an original video animation (OVA) special bundled with the limited edition of the tenth volume of the Maken-Ki! manga series. Produced by studio Xebec, this release expanded upon the television anime adaptation of Hiromitsu Takeda’s manga, which centers on Takeru Oyama and his life at a school where students use magical weapons known as Maken.
The production sought to deliver a fan-focused, comedic side story that leaned heavily into the series' established harem and ecchi elements. By packaging this special with the print release, the creators aimed to incentivize manga sales and provide loyal followers with additional visual content that pushed the boundaries of the broadcast television standards in place for the preceding series.
