The year is 21XX. Reploids are commonplace now, after Dr. Cain rediscovered Dr. Light's old lab and based several designs off of Dr.Light's original, called "Megaman X." X, meanwhile, has joined the Maverick Hunters, and works with unit leader Zero under the command of General Sigma. It is their job to terminate rogue reploids, those who have become violent.

Where it came from
Released in 2005 to coincide with the launch of Mega Man Maverick Hunter X for the PlayStation Portable, The Day of Sigma serves as a prequel to the original Mega Man X narrative. Produced by the studio Xebec, the short film was designed to bridge the gap between the end of the original Mega Man series and the rise of the Maverick threats, providing essential lore regarding Sigma’s fall from grace and the emergence of X as a protector.
The animation was helmed by the team at Xebec, who aimed to modernize the classic aesthetic of the Mega Man X series while maintaining the dark, industrial tone characteristic of the franchise's early PlayStation entries. The production received a generally positive reception from fans, who appreciated the deepened psychological context given to the primary antagonist and the stylistic update to the character designs, which remained faithful to Keiji Inafune's original vision.
