Provenance

Where it came from

Megazone 23 Part III was released in 1989 as a two-part original video animation, serving as the final installment in the pioneering cyberpunk saga produced by Artmic and AIC. Following the narrative shifts of its predecessors, this entry transitioned into a more overtly futuristic and high-tech aesthetic, moving away from the 1980s urban setting of the original while maintaining the franchise's core themes of simulated reality and identity.

The production underwent significant design changes, featuring character designs by Yasuomi Umetsu, who moved the series toward a slicker, more stylized visual language typical of the late eighties ova boom. While the series struggled to replicate the immense cultural impact of the original 1985 installment, it remains a notable example of the creative experimentation within the bubble-era Japanese animation industry, reflecting the era's fascination with cybernetic concepts and digital landscapes.
