Where it came from
Meisou-Ou Border was released as a two-part original video animation (OVA) series by studio Artland in 1991. Emerging from a period of high experimentation in the Japanese home video market, the production sought to capitalize on the aesthetic trends of early nineties science fiction animation, characterized by dense, mechanical designs and philosophical, character-driven narratives.
The production was helmed by director and character designer Yoshinori Kanemori, who aimed to blend traditional cel-based aesthetic sensibilities with a moody, introspective tone common to the era's cult classics. While it did not reach the broad mainstream success of larger franchise entries of the decade, it remains a notable example of the boutique, visually distinctive OVA projects that Artland produced during its independent creative peak.
