Where it came from
Meisou! Underworld was produced by Studio Pierrot in 2014 as a niche experimental project. It emerged during a period when the studio, historically known for long-running shonen adaptations, was exploring shorter, stylized formats that utilized digital animation techniques to push against conventional aesthetic boundaries. The project was conceived as a surrealist narrative piece, prioritizing atmosphere and abstract visual storytelling over traditional plot structures.
The creative direction for the project leaned heavily into dark, moody imagery and avant-garde character design. Studio Pierrot employed a distinct visual language characterized by high-contrast palettes and fluid, unsettling transitions to reflect the titular underworld setting. Upon its release, it was received primarily as a curious stylistic exercise by industry observers, noted for its divergence from the studio’s mainstream output and its commitment to a specific, haunting tone.
