Menghuan Xiyou

Menghuan Xiyou, known internationally as Fantasy Westward Journey, originated as a massively multiplayer online role-playing game developed by NetEase in 2003. Its immense popularity in China led to the creation of an original net animation (ONA) series, designed to expand the franchise’s reach into multimedia storytelling. The animation utilizes a distinct aesthetic that mirrors the game’s Q-version character designs, blending traditional Chinese mythology with lighthearted, modern artistic sensibilities to appeal to the game's core player base.

The animation was produced to deepen the cultural footprint of the intellectual property, translating the game’s turn-based combat and social dynamics into a linear narrative. Upon release, it was received primarily as a companion piece for existing fans, praised for its faithful character interpretations and the colorful, stylized animation that brought the familiar digital world of the Journey to the West adaptation to life for a wider streaming audience.
