Where it came from
Menghuan Xiyou 2, or Fantasy Westward Journey 2, emerged in 2013 as a promotional ONA series developed by NetEase to expand the cultural footprint of their flagship MMORPG. The project was designed to capitalize on the immense popularity of the original game by translating its familiar, whimsical aesthetic and traditional Chinese mythological themes into a serialized animated format for a wider digital audience.
The production utilized a distinct 3D-to-2D hybrid animation style intended to bridge the gap between the game's recognizable character models and the fluid storytelling expectations of the Chinese animation industry. Upon its release, the series was received primarily as a loyalty-building tool for the existing player base, effectively serving as an extension of the game's lore and an entry point for newer fans into the expansive universe established by the franchise.
