Where it came from
Menghuan Xiyou: Lei Nu Weiji, or Fantasy Westward Journey: Thunder Girl's Crisis, is a 2013 animated ONA based on the immensely popular Chinese MMORPG series developed by NetEase. The project was created to expand the transmedia presence of the game, leveraging its well-established lore and iconic character designs to engage the player base through a narrative-driven format.
The production sought to capture the aesthetic sensibilities of the game's vibrant, mythological world, which draws heavily from Chinese folklore and the classic novel Journey to the West. While primarily aimed at loyalists of the game, the animation was noted for its attempt to translate digital assets into a fluid, episodic story format, representing the trend of Chinese gaming giants investing in professional animation studios to bolster their intellectual properties.
