Where it came from
The Meow Meow Japanese History series, known in Japan as Neko Neko Nihonshi, emerged in 2016 as an adaptation of the educational manga by Kenji Sonishi. Produced by Joker Films and directed by Tomohisa Kawamura, the third season was released in 2018, continuing the show's signature approach of reimagining pivotal figures from Japanese history as anthropomorphic cats. This creative pivot served to simplify complex historical narratives into accessible, lighthearted vignettes designed primarily for a younger demographic.
The animation style prioritizes a whimsical and minimalist aesthetic, moving away from traditional historical accuracy to emphasize character-driven comedy. The production team utilized the feline motif not only for visual charm but as a thematic framing device to highlight the quirkiness of famous samurai, poets, and political figures. Upon its release, the third season was well-received for maintaining the educational integrity of its source material while successfully leveraging the broad appeal of cat-centric humor in Japanese pop culture.
