Moldiver

Moldiver was produced by AIC and released as a six-episode original video animation series in 1993. Emerging during the height of the early 1990s boom in direct-to-video science fiction anime, the series was designed as an upbeat, comedic homage to the tokusatsu genre, specifically referencing classics like Ultraman and Kamen Rider. It occupies a unique space in anime history as a bright, colorful alternative to the darker, cyberpunk-influenced titles that dominated the OVA market at the time.

The character designs were created by Hiroyuki Kitazume, who sought to capture a lighthearted, kinetic energy that complemented the series' transformative premise. The story follows Mirai Ozora, who gains the ability to transform into the superhero Moldiver using a device stolen from her brother. While the series did not achieve the mainstream cultural ubiquity of contemporary hits, it is frequently cited by collectors for its polished aesthetic and as a quintessential example of the experimental, genre-bending creativity fostered by AIC during the nineties.
