Moldiver EX

Moldiver, released as a six-part original video animation (OVA) series in 1993, was produced by AIC and directed by Koichi Ohata. Set in a near-future Tokyo, the story follows Mirai Ozora, who discovers a transformation device capable of imbuing her with superhuman powers. The production emerged during the early 1990s boom of the 'magical girl' and superhero subgenres in Japanese animation, aiming to blend high-energy action with the lighthearted tropes of the era.

The character and mecha designs for the series were crafted by Michitaka Kikuchi, who is well known for his work on Silent Mobius. Kikuchi’s aesthetic leaned heavily into the slick, technicolor futuristic style common in the OVAs of the time, emphasizing kinetic movement and bold, stylized costuming. While the series was received as a fun, quintessential example of 90s escapism, it remains a cult item rather than a mainstream phenomenon, remembered primarily by enthusiasts of the OVA-era animation style.
