Where it came from
Mottainai was released in 2015 as a spiritual successor to Glory to Rome, designed by Carl Chudyk and published by Asmadi Games. The term 'mottainai' is a Japanese expression conveying a sense of regret concerning waste, a concept that sits at the core of the game's mechanics where discarded cards are repurposed into resources or buildings. The game was developed to provide a tight, high-complexity engine-building experience within a portable deck-building format.
The game is noted for its minimalist aesthetic and dense mechanical interplay, featuring illustrations by Greg May. Upon release, it was lauded by strategy enthusiasts for its intricate design, though it is frequently noted for its steep learning curve and unconventional rulebook. It remains a definitive title in Chudyk’s body of work, representing a transition toward more abstract and refined card management systems.
