My Beautiful Girl Mari

My Beautiful Girl Mari is a South Korean animated feature film directed by Lee Sung-gang and released in 2002. It was produced as a collaborative effort between the animation studio Myung Films and the wider South Korean creative industry, aiming to showcase the potential of domestic computer-generated imagery blended with traditional artistic sensibilities. The film emerged during a period of growth for the Korean animation industry, positioning itself as an introspective, artistic alternative to the more commercial, action-oriented animated content prevalent at the time.

The film was designed as a lyrical, atmospheric exploration of childhood imagination and the transition into adolescence, often drawing comparisons to the works of Hayao Miyazaki in its pacing and visual style. The aesthetic relies heavily on a soft, dreamlike color palette and fluid transitions between reality and fantasy. Upon its release, it was well-received by critics for its emotional depth and distinct visual identity, eventually winning the Grand Prix at the Annecy International Animated Film Festival, which helped bolster its reputation as a significant work of independent global animation.
