Where it came from
My Big Emergency is a 2010 independent documentary film directed by Maria Finitzo. The production grew out of the Kartemquin Films collective, an organization known for its commitment to socially conscious filmmaking and long-term observational documentaries. The film serves as a focused investigation into the complex American healthcare system, specifically examining the lives of families navigating the economic and emotional strain of sudden medical crises.
Finitzo utilized a character-driven approach to highlight the human cost of systemic policy failures. By centering the narrative on the experiences of individual patients and their caregivers, the film aimed to demystify the intricacies of insurance coverage and medical debt. Upon its release, it was regarded by critics as a poignant piece of advocacy journalism that prioritized personal testimony to frame broader debates surrounding healthcare reform in the United States.
