Where it came from
Mysterious Play: Eikoden was released in 2001 as a three-episode original video animation series, serving as a direct sequel to the popular Fushigi Yûgi anime adaptation. Produced by Studio Pierrot, the series was designed to conclude the narrative arcs left unresolved after the conclusion of the original television run. It adapts the later chapters of Yuu Watase's manga, focusing on the character Tasuki and the lingering mysteries surrounding the world of the Four Gods.
The production sought to maintain the visual consistency of the original 1990s anime, utilizing the studio's established aesthetic style to bridge the gap between the source material and the animated medium. While reception was primarily concentrated among the established fanbase eager for closure, the series is noted for its attempt to condense complex manga plotlines into a short-form format. It remains a significant entry for collectors interested in the post-series content produced by Pierrot during the peak of the franchise's popularity.
