Where it came from
The Mysterious Star, often referred to as Hoshi no Ko, emerged from the Sanrio character design archives during a period in the late 1970s when the studio was experimenting with more ethereal and celestial motifs. It was developed to expand Sanrio's reach beyond its core demographic, moving away from the purely animal-centric aesthetic of Hello Kitty toward more abstract, whimsical designs that focused on astrology and dreamscapes.
The character features a minimalist star-shaped silhouette with a soft, gentle expression, reflecting the signature Sanrio focus on 'kawaii' simplicity. While it never achieved the ubiquitous cultural footprint of characters like My Melody or Little Twin Stars, the design remains a staple of the studio's mid-century vintage aesthetic, prized by collectors for its understated charm and historical representation of Sanrio's creative diversification during that era.
