Mysterious Play OVA

The Fushigi Yûgi OVA series was released by Studio Pierrot in 1996, serving as a continuation of the popular anime adaptation of Yuu Watase's manga. Following the conclusion of the main television series, the OVA was commissioned to provide a more definitive conclusion to the story, covering events that took place after the initial conflict. It represents a significant period in 1990s anime where high-budget direct-to-video releases were frequently used to expand upon established shoujo narratives.

The production maintains the aesthetic established by the original series, focusing on the dramatic development of Miaka Yuki and Tamahome. As with the television show, the visual style was guided by the character designs of Hideyuki Motohashi, who sought to translate Watase's intricate manga illustrations into a fluid animation format. The project was received by fans as a necessary expansion of the series lore, praised for its emotional weight and its dedication to resolving the character arcs that had captured a dedicated international audience.
