A short TV advertising spot featuring a small green pig with enormous eyes.
The title Nandarou implies that even its creators didn't really know what kind of creature it was supposed to be. However, NTV (Nihon TV) chose it as their station's mascot.

Where it came from
Nandarou, which translates to 'What is it?', serves as the mascot for Studio Ghibli. Created in 1992, the character was designed to act as a playful, enigmatic bridge between the studio and its audience, appearing in various promotional materials and television spots. The design, characterized by its simple, blob-like shape and expressive features, reflects the studio's preference for whimsical, non-threatening aesthetics that resonate across generations.
The character was conceived as a creative shorthand for the Ghibli identity during a period of significant growth for the studio. It became a beloved fixture in Japanese media, appearing in short, animated vignettes that captured the studio’s signature charm. Because the character was never the protagonist of a feature film, it remains an exclusive, almost insider symbol for those familiar with the studio’s corporate history and institutional culture.
