Where it came from
Natsu no Niwa, or Summer Garden, was released in 2020 by the Japanese animation studio FILMONY. It was created as a promotional piece, notably serving as the animated music video for the song 'Summer' by the artist Hitsujibungaku. The production emerged from the studio's interest in blending atmospheric, emotive storytelling with a distinctively vibrant visual language that captures the fleeting, melancholic essence of the Japanese summer.
The film is celebrated for its lush, painterly aesthetic and fluid character animation, which eschews traditional rigid structures in favor of a dreamy, impressionistic tone. Directed and animated with a focus on intimate, character-driven moments, the piece received positive attention for its ability to evoke strong nostalgia and sensory memories, solidifying FILMONY’s reputation for high-quality, short-form animation that functions as an independent work of art.
