Where it came from
Natsu no Owari, or The End of Summer, is a seminal 1964 novel written by the renowned Japanese author Setouchi Jakucho. The work is deeply autobiographical, chronicling the author's intense and complicated extramarital affair, which served as a transformative period in her personal and literary life. It is widely considered a cornerstone of her early literary career, establishing her reputation for exploring the complexities of female desire and societal constraints.
The narrative is noted for its stark, unvarnished emotional honesty and its lyrical exploration of isolation following a fractured relationship. Critics and scholars often point to the novel as a turning point in modern Japanese literature for its bold subversion of domestic norms. Upon its release, it was well-received for its psychological depth and helped solidify Jakucho's status as a significant voice in 20th-century Japanese prose, eventually leading her to win the Women's Literary Prize.
