Natsu no Uta

Natsu no Uta is a short animated work produced by Studio Craftar, released in 2018 as a promotional collaboration for the Japanese mobile carrier au. The project was conceived as part of the studio's broader initiative to showcase their technical prowess in high-quality 3D computer-generated imagery, blending traditional Japanese aesthetic sensibilities with modern digital animation techniques. Its creation reflects the trend of Japanese corporations commissioning boutique animation houses to produce high-concept, narrative-driven advertisements that emphasize artistic atmosphere over overt product placement.

The visual direction for the piece highlights Craftar’s signature approach to cel-shaded 3D animation, which aims to bridge the gap between hand-drawn artistry and the fluid capabilities of digital rendering. The character designs and environmental backdrops were crafted to evoke a nostalgic, gentle summer mood, focusing on soft lighting and expressive facial animation. Upon its debut, the short was well-received by animation enthusiasts who praised the studio for its ability to maintain emotional resonance within a brief timeframe, cementing Craftar’s reputation for producing visually polished and narratively concise shorts.
