Where it came from
Nazotokine, or The Riddle Story, was produced by the studio Tengu Kobou and released in 2016 as a short-form television series. It emerged during a period in the mid-2010s when short-duration anime experiments were gaining traction in Japan, often utilizing minimal animation styles to focus on puzzle-solving and riddles. The series was designed as an interactive viewing experience, encouraging the audience to engage with complex brain teasers presented during each episode.
The production sought to blend traditional animation with the trend of puzzle-based mobile gaming that was popular in Japan at the time. Directed by Norio Kashima, the series features character designs by the studio's team, aiming for a clean, accessible aesthetic that kept distractions low while viewers solved the riddles. It was received as a niche experiment, appreciated primarily by fans of logic puzzles and those looking for a non-traditional viewing experience.
