Where it came from
Naze Nani!? Witch Craft Works was produced as a series of short, comedic specials bundled with the Blu-ray and DVD releases of the 2014 anime series Witch Craft Works. Animated by J.C.Staff, these episodes were designed to offer a lighter, meta-fictional look at the world of the main series, featuring the characters in deformed, chibi-style character designs that contrasted with the more polished aesthetic of the primary show.
These shorts were created to bridge the gap between the main narrative arcs and provide supplementary entertainment for fans of the source manga by Ryu Mizunagi. By focusing on humorous explanations of the series' magical mechanics and character relationships, the production team aimed to deepen audience engagement. The shorts were generally received as a charming bonus that highlighted the studio's ability to pivot between different visual tones while maintaining the core appeal of the franchise.
