Nekojiru Gekijou Jirujiru ORIGINAL

Nekojiru Gekijou Jirujiru is a surrealist animated series based on the dark, cynical manga work of the late artist Chiyomi Hashiguchi, known professionally as Nekojiru. Produced by Japan Home Video and released in 1999, the series was designed to translate the disquieting aesthetic of her original comic strips into an episodic television format. The animation captures a jagged, intentionally unsettling visual style that juxtaposes innocent-looking cat characters with themes of existential dread, dark humor, and unpredictable violence.

The series remains a cult classic among fans of avant-garde animation, valued for its uncompromising adherence to Hashiguchi's grim, subconscious-inspired narrative style. It arrived during a period of experimentation in late-nineties Japanese television, where adult-oriented animation could explore nihilistic and experimental storytelling. The production is widely regarded as a faithful, if deeply disturbing, adaptation that maintains the author's unique voice, which was shaped significantly by her personal struggles and a desire to subvert the conventions of 'cute' animal-centric animation.
