Where it came from
Neko Kikaku is a 2018 animated film produced by Studio Speed, a Japanese animation house known for its focused approach to niche visual storytelling. The project emerged during a period where indie-style, character-driven animation was finding a more consistent audience through digital streaming platforms, allowing smaller studios to experiment with shorter, episodic-style features that prioritized artistic tone over traditional blockbuster narratives.
The film represents a synthesis of contemporary digital animation techniques, focusing on fluid, stylized character movement that leans into the studio's preference for expressive, minimalist design. It was received by audiences as a charming curiosity, noted for its low-key atmosphere and the distinct aesthetic signature of the production team, which prioritized atmosphere and pacing over complex plot structures.
