Where it came from
Neko Jockey was produced in 2021 by the Japanese animation studio DLE, known for its distinctively minimalist, Flash-animated style often seen in experimental short-form projects. The series emerged as part of the studio's broader efforts to create bite-sized, surreal comedy content, utilizing a satirical premise that places house cats in the high-stakes, professional environment of horse racing.
The design philosophy behind the series centers on the juxtaposition of the mundane, cute aesthetic of felines with the fast-paced, high-tension atmosphere of the jockey circuit. By relying on a simple, expressive art style that highlights the absurdity of the feline protagonists in racing silks, DLE aimed to capture the attention of a digital-first audience accustomed to viral, short-form humor rather than traditional narrative arcs.
