Where it came from
Neko no Dayan, or Dayan the Cat, originated from the imaginative picture book series by Japanese artist Akiko Ikeda. First introduced in the 1980s, the character represents a curious tabby cat residing in the mystical land of Wachifield. The 2014 television series was produced to commemorate the franchise's enduring popularity, adapting Ikeda's distinct, textured illustrative style into a series of short, atmospheric vignettes that capture the whimsical and slightly melancholy nature of the original source material.
The 2014 series utilizes a unique animation style that mimics the feel of moving oil paintings, staying true to Akiko Ikeda's signature aesthetic. Directed by Megumi Nishigai, the show focuses on the gentle, slice-of-life adventures of Dayan and his companions. It was well-received by fans of the books for its faithfulness to the tone and visual language of Wachifield, successfully translating the stillness and charm of Ikeda's art into a serialized television format.
