Where it came from
Neko no Heishi ga Yuku, or The Cat Soldier Goes, is a unique animation project produced by NHK. Emerging from the network's long-standing tradition of experimental and children's programming, the piece reflects the studio's mid-period focus on blending whimsical anthropomorphic storytelling with distinct, illustrative visual techniques that were common in Japanese public broadcasting throughout the late 20th century.
The design and artistic direction of the piece are characteristic of NHK's collaborative animation style, which often prioritized expressive character movement and clear, narrative-driven aesthetics over hyper-detailed realism. While it remains a niche entry in the studio's vast library, it is recognized by enthusiasts for its nostalgic charm and the specific minimalist aesthetic that defined early NHK short-form animation.
