Neko to Nezumi

Neko to Nezumi, which translates to Cat and Mouse, is a representative example of early Japanese animation created during the pre-war era. Produced in the mid-1930s, the film reflects the period's growing interest in Western-style cel animation and the efforts of Japanese studios to experiment with slapstick humor and anthropomorphic animal characters, drawing stylistic inspiration from the burgeoning American animation industry.

The film was crafted within the context of Japan's emerging experimental animation movement, where artists were beginning to move away from traditional paper-cutout styles toward more fluid motion techniques. While individual credits for this specific short are often obscured by the passage of time and the studio-based production methods of the era, the work is recognized by historians as part of a collective endeavor by Japanese animators to establish a unique aesthetic identity while navigating the technical challenges of the silent film transition.
