Where it came from
Nekota no Koto ga Kininatte Shikatanai, or Nekota Is Always on My Mind, began as a manga series by Rie Kano in 2013 before transitioning into a special 2015 format release. The work emerged from the shōjo manga tradition, focusing on the delicate and often humorous interpersonal dynamics of high school students. It was serialized in Margaret magazine, a publication known for its long history of shaping teen romance narratives.
The series centers on Amane Mikiko, a reserved girl who becomes fascinated by her mysterious classmate, Nekota, whose face is curiously hidden by a cat head. Rie Kano designed this central conceit to serve as a visual metaphor for the barriers students build in adolescence, blending lighthearted comedy with the earnest exploration of first love. The work was well-received for its unique aesthetic approach and its ability to balance whimsical design choices with grounded emotional stakes.
