Where it came from
Nekota no Koto ga Kininatte Shikatanai was released as a short promotional ONA in 2015 to celebrate the release of the sixth volume of Rie Yamazaki's popular shoujo manga series. Produced by the studio Zexcs, the animation serves as a vibrant distillation of the manga's core premise, focusing on the comedic and budding romantic tension between the protagonist, Aiko, and her mysterious, cat-like classmate, Nekota.
The character design maintains the distinct aesthetic of Yamazaki's original illustrations, emphasizing expressive, oversized eyes and a lighthearted, pastel-influenced palette intended to appeal to the manga's established demographic. While the ONA was primarily marketed as a visual accompaniment for existing fans of the source material, it was received as a charming, if brief, adaptation that captured the whimsical tone and distinctive character interactions that define the wider Nekota series.
