Nero

Nero is a seminal work by the Italian comic artist Massimo Rotundo, originally released in the 1990s as part of the flourishing era of European adult-oriented graphic novels. Set in a bleak, post-apocalyptic Rome, the narrative reimagines historical and mythological themes through a gritty, visceral lens that reflects the author's interest in the collapse of societal structures. The work emerged from a period when Italian comics were gaining significant international attention for their sophisticated, painterly aesthetic and dark philosophical inquiries.

The design of Nero is characterized by Rotundo’s masterful command of light and shadow, utilizing a highly stylized, illustrative approach that prioritizes atmospheric tension over traditional panel layouts. By blending classical architectural motifs with industrial decay, Rotundo aimed to create a visual synthesis of antiquity and futurism. Upon its release, the work was largely received as a significant artistic achievement, praised by critics for its evocative color palette and its ability to maintain a dense, cinematic quality throughout the sequence.
