Where it came from
The Ninja Collection was produced by ILCA and released in 2020 as an anthology-style television series. The project emerged during a period of experimentation within the Japanese animation industry, aimed at utilizing the studio's technical expertise in computer-generated assets and traditional cel-style aesthetics to revitalize classic folklore tropes for a modern broadcast audience.
The series focuses on the visual language of stealth and historical iconography, with character designs intended to evoke a minimalist, high-contrast look suitable for episodic short-form storytelling. Upon its release, it was noted primarily for its distinct artistic direction, which balanced contemporary digital rendering techniques with the grounded, narrative-driven pacing characteristic of earlier era ninja-themed media.
