Where it came from
Ninja Girl & Samurai Master: Episode 0, released in 2016, serves as a standalone special prequel to the anime series Nobunaga no Shinobi, based on the historical comedy manga by Naoki Shigeno. Produced by TMS Entertainment and directed by Akitaro Daichi, the project was designed to introduce audiences to the whimsical yet historically grounded adaptation of the life of Chidori, a young ninja who pledges her loyalty to the legendary warlord Oda Nobunaga.
The production sought to balance lighthearted, gag-heavy storytelling with genuine respect for the Sengoku period, a difficult tonal tightrope managed by Daichi’s signature fast-paced comedic direction. Upon its release, the special was received as a charming primer for the main series, praised for its concise character introductions and its ability to establish the earnest, comedic dynamic between the titular characters without the narrative constraints of the full-length episodes.
