Provenance

Where it came from

Ninkū was produced by Studio Pierrot and first broadcast in 1995, emerging during a period when the studio was solidifying its reputation for high-octane action anime. Based on the manga by Kōji Kiriyama, the series follows the journey of a young martial artist named Fūsuke who wields elemental powers in a post-war fantasy setting. The adaptation was notable for its distinct visual style and its blend of comedic character designs with more serious, dramatic narrative stakes.

The character designs were crafted to reflect a fusion of classic shōnen tropes and a unique, slightly eccentric aesthetic that distinguished the series from its contemporaries. Upon its release, the show was well-received for its animation quality and dynamic combat sequences, eventually becoming a cult classic of the mid-1990s. Its success helped cement Studio Pierrot's status as a powerhouse in the industry, paving the way for their later work on long-running global hits.
