Synopsis

Sasuke is the story of a ninja child that starts right after the battle of Sekigahara where Tokugawa Ieyasu becomes shogun of Japan. Sarutobi Sasuke (Jump Like Monkey Sasuke) was a famous ninja in the employ of Sanada Daisuke who fought for the losing side against Ieyasu. He was believed to have committed suicide when he was trapped in a castle, but the story takes off that he really escaped and that Sarutobi is not a name of a ninja but a whole ninja clan. Provenance

Where it came from

Ninja the Wonder Boy, known in Japan as Manga Sarutobi Sasuke, was produced by Knack Productions and aired in 1979. It was part of a wave of historical anime adaptations that sought to blend traditional Japanese folklore with the high-energy aesthetics of late 1970s television animation. The series follows the legendary ninja Sasuke as he navigates the tumultuous Sengoku period, aiming to provide younger audiences with a heroic figure grounded in both martial arts tradition and fantasy tropes.

The character design and overall visual direction were influenced by the limitations and distinct stylistic hallmarks of Knack Productions, a studio often remembered for its experimental and sometimes unconventional production techniques. While the series did not reach the widespread international acclaim of other contemporary mecha or space-faring shows, it remains a notable example of the era's focus on adapting period drama for a serialized television format. It is frequently discussed by animation historians for its earnest attempt to modernize the classic Sasuke archetype for the post-Astro Boy generation.
