Oban Star-Racers

Oban Star-Racers was created by Savin Yeatman-Eiffel and produced by the French studio Sav! The World Productions in collaboration with the Japanese studio Hal Film Maker. Development began in the early 2000s, emerging from a desire to blend Western narrative sensibilities with the high-octane aesthetic of Japanese animation, specifically focusing on a pan-galactic racing competition that emphasizes personal growth over simple combat.

The series is noted for its pioneering use of cel-shaded 3D character models integrated into 2D environments, a stylistic choice intended to give the high-speed racing sequences a sense of depth and fluidity. Upon its 2006 release, it gained a dedicated international following for its emotional storytelling and unique visual identity, eventually being recognized as a successful example of creative synergy between European and Japanese production teams.
