"The pejorative word obatalian is a pun between the Japanese word obaasan (old lady) and the English word battalion. Obatalian are known to always enter a train running as fast as they can, bumping others people in order to catch a free seat before the others. They haggle things that aren't normally haggled like grocery store produce. They are fearless and pitiless, just like a battalion of barbarians. This anime is follows 6 stories of one such Obatalian and her wake of destruction."

Where it came from
Obatalian emerged in 1990 as an experimental special produced by the animation powerhouse Sunrise. During this era, Sunrise was heavily invested in pushing the boundaries of mechanical design and narrative complexity, often utilizing short-form specials to test visual concepts that would later influence their high-profile television series. The project reflects the studio's peak period of aesthetic experimentation in the late eighties and early nineties.
The design of Obatalian captures the quintessential mecha-centric sensibilities of the period, characterized by intricate, industrial-leaning linework and the dramatic, high-contrast palette common in Sunrise productions of the time. While the title occupies a niche space in the studio's vast library, it is frequently cited by animation historians as a stylistic precursor to the more polished, darker mechanical themes that defined later Sunrise projects throughout the decade.
