In Edo in the mid-1800's, fireworks maker Seikichi Tamaya and his friends struggle to live under the harsh morality laws imposed by the strict city councilor, which ban all luxuries, including fireworks. One day, a strange girl stops by Sekichi's shop with an equally strange request: she wants Sekichi to build a firework that can reach the moon.

Where it came from
Oh! Edo Rocket was produced by the acclaimed studio Madhouse and broadcast in 2007. The series was directed by Seiji Mizushima and written by Dai Sato, drawing its inspiration from the theatrical works of the Shinkansen troupe. Set in an alternate version of Edo-period Tokyo, the story follows a pyrotechnician named Seikichi who is commissioned to build a rocket to the moon, blending historical aesthetics with modern, absurdist science fiction tropes.
The show is noted for its distinctive visual style, which deliberately mimics the pacing and staging of traditional live-action stage plays. By incorporating fourth-wall breaking and theatrical commentary, the creators aimed to bridge the gap between traditional Japanese performing arts and contemporary anime storytelling. While it did not achieve mainstream commercial dominance, it was well-regarded by critics for its ambitious creative direction and its playful subversion of historical genre conventions.
